Hospitals on thin ice..

By Angus McDowell.

You hear of our hospital staff being stretched to the limits, operations going wrong with  patients going home with sponges and other medical equipment left in them and patients dying because of lack of care.
The government is funding billions and billions dollars to try and improve Australian hospitals, but no matter what they can’t get more nurses, resulting in overworked hospital staff.
With some more thought, more planning & better communication with our hospital staff, we could build the best medical system in the world, or, if not, have a hospital system thats no better then a house-fire.
Our governments met and arranged over 43 billion dollars to be injected into our dying medical systems within the next 5 years.
While its obvious we need new staff, and better conditions for our hardworking nurses and doctors, maybe some thought should be put into reaching the bottom of the situation instead of covering it up with more staff.
Australia in 2006 gave a negative opinion about the Australian Access Smart card, which was designed to hold your personal identification number, that could be linked to a database system.
The debate was a big brother like situation would form, leaving our citizens watched and the government knowing each of our moves. Which is a reasonable response really, since who would like a stalker?
But, put that into a medical perspective, and you could increase productivity and even higher the chances of survival over death.
Imagine this, your rushed into hospital, unconscious and bleeding to death. Your blood is tested, while other tests are run and 15 minutes later your receiving the blood you desperately need before being wheeled into theatre.
Or, your rushed into hospital, unconscious and bleeding to death. Your smart card is swiped, and instantly the nurse knows your blood type and also that your allergic to a drug they were just about to give you. Your wheeled into theatre in 2 minutes, with more informed hospital staff.
If some central database was setup, your doctors appointments, medical history etc could be accessed by our nurses within seconds reducing valuable time contacting doctors, sampling and doing other tests.
Then you can see the privacy issues that are related with that, but, if the database is centralized, the owner of the information could login, and delete or change privacy settings that would limit certain information being shown from the comfort of their home.
For a relatively simple exercise, we could reduce time & increase our hospitals productivity by not wasting our nurses valuable time doing pointless tests to find information that already exists.
Could be the difference between life and death.

Getting it by Alex Sanchez

By Russell Nankervis.

Getting it is a story about 15 year old Carlos who goes through a transformation to try and get the girl he wants. He has a crush on a girl named Roxy who is a very attractive girl in his year, but there’s an issue, he doesn’t have the confidence to do it so he formulates a plan late one night while channel surfing, to get Sal (the school gay guy) to give him a makeover like they do on Queer Eye for the Straight guy. With the help of Sal, Carlos changes in more ways than one and learns more about what true friendship is and the effects of homophobia and love itself. Not only for Carlos but for the reader it is an emotional rollercoaster that could relate to any one in High School whether Gay, Straight or Bisexual. Alex Sanchez is a gay Author who writes books about Gay Youth and in this novel “Getting it” he used a straight person as the main character to give a different stance on homosexuality, his books are never negative towards homosexuals but they do give a direct view into the word of Gay Youth. This is a book from senior fiction but that does not mean you should not read this book, permission will be needed from your parents if you aren’t in years 11 or 12 but I recomend the older readers of the junior years read this. Out of 10 I give “Getting it” a perfect 10.

Bathurst City Centre Opens!

By Russell Nankervis.

On the 19th of March 2009, the very speculated and controversial Bathurst City Centre is now Open, with many stores including: Dicksmiths, Jeanswest, the Reject Shop and Tarocash.
Though a large percentage of the stores in there are ones that are in the already existing Stockland and Bathurst chase shopping centres.

Stockland and Bathurst Chase were both quiet as most of Bathurst flocked to check out the new shopping centre today.

Mixed views and opinions have been expressed about the new shopping complex as some believe that it has been a waste of money and that it could of been spent on supporting local business or oven building a foot bridge between the two existing centres; while others have been pleased with the new store and can't wait to see what else it brings.

It is early days but already the effects of this new centre are being felt throught out Bathurst.
With two Woolies now in Bathurst, Coles is feeling the pressure with never before seen specials and a family day this Sunday no where in Australia except Bathurst is getting this deal.
Bathurst Chase has lost a few stores to the new shopping centre and in times of economic down turns this could mean business's having to shut down.

Though it's first day of business let us know what you think of the new Bathurst City Shopping Centre.
